February 15, 2019

Here is a look at what we accomplished the last couple of weeks in school...

We had a great time celebrating the 100th day of school! One of the activities we did was to see how many times we could do a certain thing (such as clapping our hands, writing our names, and jumping up and down) in 100 seconds. It was so much fun!

In math, the children have been introduced to various diagrams to help them organize their mathematical thinking in order to solve addition and subtraction problems. The diagrams we discussed were: Total and Part Diagrams, Change Diagrams, and Comparison Diagrams. The children used their knowledge to decide what diagram worked best for various word problems. We also spent some time collecting data and graphing it with both picture and bar graphs.  We are now beginning to explore partial sums to combine two and three digit numbers together.

The student’s ability to write opinion pieces is continuing to strengthen. After putting the final touches on our restaurant reviews, the children are now beginning to write other reviews. This time they get to pick the topic they would like to write an opinion piece about.  They can review a game, toy, place, famous person, pet, and much more! The children are getting really good at starting their writing by stating their opinion, giving their supporting details with examples, and ending with a conclusion.

Our travels around the world brought us to the continent of Australia this week! We spent some time learning more about this beautiful continent, and next week we’ll be exploring the incredible Great Barrier Reef!

We also had a special visit from the Discovery Museum where the students learned about the physical changes of matter.  The students learned about dry ice and liquid nitrogen!  There were a lot of fun experiments involved!

During our spelling time after break we'll be checking on the spelling of the 100 High Frequency Words.  We will also be sending home a study guide after break for their Continents and Oceans Assessment that will be on March 1st.

Hope you all have a wonderful break!!
