I hope you had a wonderful weekend! It was nice to see so
many of you at the Apple Blossom Parade! Here is a look at what we will be
doing in school this week.
We are currently in the continent of Asia and learning about
the culture of Japan. This week the students will be working on our scrapbook
pages which include writing a Haiku poem which is a type of Japanese poetry.
This will be our last week on our Trip Around the World so we will celebrate
with a pretend trip home with all of the second grade students on Thursday. The
students will also be taking their assessment on the mountains and rivers on
Friday (study guide was sent home last week).
In Math this week we will continue with Unit 9. The children
will first use base-10 blocks to solve subtraction problems. Then, after they
have a concrete understanding using the base-10 blocks, they will learn a
strategy called "Expand and Trade." We will end the week working with
money. The children will practice finding coin and bill combinations with
equivalent values.
The students are continuing to work on their informational
country writing during our writing blocks. We will be putting the books
together soon and are eager to share them at our End of the Year Super Star
Celebration.
Speaking of celebration, please mark your calendars.....

Homework this Week:
Coming home on Monday is a long-term project to wrap up our
Around the World and Ancestor units. Your child will choose one thing they learned
about the country they researched and present it to the class. There is a list
of project options that they can choose from. The students will have 3 weeks to
plan and practice their presentations. Therefore, homework this week will be a
little different than usual. Your child will be expected to do the following:
* begin planning their project
* continue practicing the mountains and oceans (assessment
is this Friday)
* nightly math worksheets
Although we still encourage your child to read for their 15
minutes per night, there will not be a Reading Log to record what they read
each night this week. There will also not be any spelling for the week.
Spelling will resume next week. If you have any questions about the homework,
please let me know. Thanks for your understanding with these changes.
