It's
hard to believe that it's already May! Time flies when you're having fun!
This
week during writing time, we will continue with our country research and
writing our informational paragraphs. The kids are really enjoying this project
and doing a fantastic job! Also, the students will have the opportunity to
research an African animal this week and write a paragraph or two about the
animal they chose.
Speaking
of Africa, this week we will focus on the country of Nigeria and will learn
about the culture of the country. We will end the week working on our African
scrapbook pages and doing an African craft.
In
math, the students will be taking the Unit 8 assessment on Monday and Tuesday.
Mid-week we will begin Unit 9, which is our last unit of the year. This unit
will take several weeks to complete and will focus on Equal Shares and Whole
Number Operations. The first couple of lessons will have the children divide
shapes and use fraction vocabulary to name the shares. I also introduced
the class to a fun new math “challenge” this week called Powerlines. Many of them seem interested in giving this a
try at home. Here is the link if you’d
like to give it a try:
On
Thursday the kids will attend a presentation called "Safe Routes."
This presentation will teach students about pedestrian safety (sidewalk,
crosswalk, and parking lot). The kids will have the opportunity to
"act" out some of the possible situations they may find themselves
in.
I
hope you have a wonderful week!
